Website 2 Backup Cryptography

The cryptography settings are available from Settings » Security.
With Website 2 Backup you can encrypt all your website files and databases backups with a very strong encryption. All your data is protected on storage and during transfer, by this way we offer the highest level of security required by your commercial and sensitive informations. You control 2 parameters :

  • Cryptography key : enter a key phrase to protect your backups, in this format: ItIsMyKeyPhrase1
  • Backup encryption checkbox : must be ticked to activate backup encryption.

If the backup encryption is activated you do not need to use a secure connection for your FTP or Email transfer.
You can share key phrase between projects if you want to securely export the content of one website to another one.
Every time you change your key phrase you will have a message from Website 2 Backup to confirm your new key phrase.

Even if you think you do not have sensitive data in your website you should encrypt your website backups. A very large majority (maybe 99.5%) of scripts use  md5 to encrypt administrators and users passwords in the database. It is not secure, it is very easy for a hacker, even a newbie, to crack it, if have doubts take a look at this post explaining how to crack md5 passwords online. If you do not encrypt your backups the content is readable on your storage and during transfer, it is easy to crack all your passwords.

There is no backdoor to decrypt your archives, if you loose your pass phrase there is no alternative way to open your files. As we have developed our own technology, with a very strong cipher to encrypt large archives on server with PHP, brute force or dictionary attack are not possible on files encrypted with Website 2 Backup. Keep your pass phrase in a safe place to never forget it.
